Die Welt ist in Gefahr. In den Medien der westlichen Länder wird immer über Katastrophen berichtet. Die Bevölkerung erkennt die Bedrohung durch die globale Erwärmung. Es scheint nur einen einzigen Ausweg zu geben: die schnelle und energische Umsetzung der nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Ihre Anwendung in der Architektur und der Stadtplanung geht uns alle an.

Als Antwort auf den Dokumentarfilm "Eine Unbequeme Wahrheit" von Davis Guggenheim, in dem Al Gore über die ökologischen Herausforderungen spricht, denen sich de Menschheit kurzfristig stellen muss, haben wir zwölf der wichtigsten Architekten unserer Zeit gefragt, wie sie Umweltbelange in der Architektur berücksichtigen. Es ist eine Reise um die Welt, von Japan nach Brasilien, über China, Italien, das Vereinigte Königreich und die USA. Es wurden Zehntausende von Kilometern zurückgelegt, um diese Architekten und ihre Projekte zu filmen, die sich alle der Umsetzung der nachhaltigen Entwicklung verschreiben.




Zwölf Menschen, zwölf Hintergründe, zwölf Sichtweisen, die wir Ihnen bald übermitteln werden. "Wir müssen uns heutzutage einer großen Herausforderung stellen", bekräftigt die französische Architektin Françoise-Hélène Jourda. "Ich glaube, es handelt sich nicht einmal mehr um eine Herausforderung. Es ist einfach eine Frage des Überlebens."

Was also tun? Anders arbeiten, um anders zu bauen und so unsere extrem angegriffene Umwelt zu schützen. Solarenergie, erneuerbare Materialien, gezielte Veränderungen in der Stadtplanung, Passivhäuser, bioklimatische Architektur. All das sind mögliche Antworten, um dieses heikle Problem anzugehen. Ohne Lektionen erteilen zu wollen, verfolgt der Film von Archiworld® namens "Last Call For Planet Earth® " das Ziel, mit kritischem Abstand die Umrisse einer wirklichen "kulturellen Revolution" aufzuzeigen, die die Vorurteile gegenüber der heutigen Architektur beseitigen wird.

Die Vorpremiere des Films findet am 12. Oktober 2007 im Kinepolis in Hasselt (Belgien) statt.

Françoise-Hélène Jourda

Sie ist wirklich eine Galionsfigur der nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Schon seit langer Zeit hat die französische Architektin ihre persönliche Arbeit dahingehend ausgerichtet, "dazu beizutragen, das katastrophale Phänomen aufzuhalten, das früher oder später unsere Lebensqualität und unsere Umwelt zerstören wird." Sie ist immer voller Energie und hat versucht, ihren Ansatz zu Ende zu führen und ihre Partner und Kunden von ihren Ideen zu überzeugen. Ihr Ziel ist es, sie dazu zu ermutigen, anders zu leben, unter anderen Bedingungen, um dazu beizutragen, dass unsere Umwelt keinen weiteren Schaden nimmt.

Dazu "muss ihre gesamte architektonische Praxis in Frage gestellt werden." Das, was sie jeden Tag tut, aber auch ihre Lehre an der Technischen Universität Wien geht in diese Richtung. Es beginnt mit einer gewissen Ethik gegenüber einem Auftrag, dann müssen die geografische Lage, das Klima und die bestehenden lokalen Ressourcen berücksichtigt werden. Es bedeutet, hauptsächlich mit erneuerbaren Materialien zu arbeiten und die Verwendung von Materialien einzuschränken, deren Produktion umweltschädlich ist. Es bedeutet auch, Regenwasser zu nutzen, auf Klimaanlagen zu verzichten, die Fassaden von Gebäuden so effizient wie möglich zu behandeln, umweltfreundliche Energie zu verwenden, Solarenergie, Solarzellen... Trotz ihrer technologischen Komplexität zeigen ihre Gebäude, dass freches Design auch umweltfreundlich umgesetzt werden kann.

Was Wohnarchitektur angeht, so ist Françoise-Hélène Jourda der Ansicht, dass der Charme des Wohnens im Allgemeinen von einer Art Nomadenleben im eigenen Haus ausgeht, bei dem der Komfort der aktuellen Tätigkeit angepasst wird. Dabei sollte jedoch die Ansicht verworfen werden, dass die Heizung und Klimatisierung den Komfort verbessern können. Man kann das Gebäude in diesem Sinne als eine Art Schutzhülle sehen, die man manchmal ablegt oder neu bekleidet. "Ich bin für eine lebendige Haut, d.h. Gebäude, die auf ihre Umwelt reagieren."

"Nachhaltige Entwicklung, das heißt zum Menschen zurück zu finden", beteuert die Architektin erneut. "Und deswegen müssen wir uns auch Gedanken über unsere Umwelt machen." Es ist vor allem ein humanistischer Ansatz. 'Hightech' gehört nicht zu ihrem Wortschatz. Für sie gibt es nur 'Softtech', sog. weiche Technologien. Dennoch ist ihre Arbeit gut in der Gesellschaft und der Kultur verankert. "Ein Architekt ist kein Designer, er macht keine Bilder, Hüllen, Kleider oder Röcke für ein Gebäude. Ein Architekt ist dafür da, dass die Menschen morgen glücklicher leben als gestern. Auf jeden Fall ist es das, was mich motiviert."

2. Akademie Mont-Cenis - 1998
Mitten im Ruhrgebiet, an der ehemaligen Stelle der Zeche Mont Cenis, steht heute ein Komplex, in dem die Prinzipien der bioklimatischen Architektur sehr strukturiert umgesetzt wurden. Im Inneren eines Wintergartens mit einer Größe von 12 000 m² herrscht ein gemäßigtes Mikroklima. Das Gebäude nutzt einige Vorrichtungen zum Schutz und zur Verbesserung der Umwelt. Die Struktur besteht aus 62 ganzen Kieferstämmen als Säulen. Die Solarenergie nimmt den größten Platz ein: 10 000 m² Solarkollektoren auf dem Dach decken den Energiebedarf und die Brauchwassererwärmung. Die natürliche Belüftung wird durch ein automatisches, motorenbetriebenes System geregelt.
3 & 4. Botanisches Museum von Bordeaux - 2006
Dieses äußerst besondere Museum ist beispielhaft im Hinblick auf die nachhaltige Entwicklung. Es besteht aus einer Verbindung von drei Architekturtypen, die auf sehr erstaunliche Art und Weise miteinander verknüpft sind: Treibhäuser, Holzkisten und große "Steine", die dem museografischen Rundgang dienen. Dieses Projekt zeigt, wie man heute umweltfreundlich bauen kann (Holzstrukturen, Solarzellen, etc.) und es zeigt eine etwas verwirrende, sehr sanfte und sehr menschliche Architektur.
5 & 6. Projekt für Bürogebäude in Paris. In Arbeit.
Dieses gewöhnlich scheinende Bürogebäude verschreibt sich dennoch dem Ansatz der nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Seine konstruktiven Techniken ermöglichen später einen einfachen Abbau und die Identifikation der verschiedenen Arten von Materialien im Hinblick auf die Wiederverwertung. Es handelt sich um ein "Null-Energie-Gebäude", das einen sehr geringen Energieverbrauch aufweist. Durch Solarzellen wird so viel elektrische Energie erzeugt, wie für das gesamte Heizsystem benötigt wird. Die natürliche Klimatisierung funktioniert mithilfe eines intelligenten Belüftungssystems.

Federal Building San Francisco

Dieses gewagte Projekt basiert auf den Konzepten der Bewegung und der Interaktion von öffentlichen und privaten Flächen. Mit 56 206 m² ist dieses Verwaltungsgebäude von San Francisco eines der ehrgeizigsten Projekte der Agentur Morphosis im Hinblick auf die Umweltverträglichkeit. Dieser städtische Anlaufpunkt definiert die Sozialkultur des Arbeitsplatzes neu, indem er den Komfort und die Produktivität der Angestellten verbessert und gleichzeitig die traditionelle Verwaltungshierarchie umwirft. Auch wenn Thom Mayne, der 2005 den Pritzker-Preis erhalten hat, genau genommen kein "grüner" Architekt ist - er hat mehrfach mangelndes Interesse oder gar eine Art Geringschätzung gegenüber den Prinzipien der grünen Architektur geäußert - so zeugt dieses Projekt doch von einem Wunsch nach nachhaltiger Entwicklung. In den letzten Jahren hat sich im Architekturbüro Morphosis einiges geändert, vor allem mit Tim Christ, der dieses Projekt leitete. Gleichzeitig war Morphosis in Europa tätig, wo bezüglich der Energieeffizienz strenge Normen einzuhalten sind (Hypo-Bank, Klangenfurt / Österreich). Bei den folgenden Projekten in den USA konnte Morphosis von diesen neuen Erkenntnissen profitieren. So beinhaltet das Verwaltungsgebäude eine lange Liste mit Stellungnahmen hinsichtlich der Umweltfreundlichkeit. Die schmale Form des Gebäudes wurde ganz genau darauf abgestimmt, dass natürliches Licht und frische Luft die Mitte von jedem Bürostockwerk erreicht. Die Südfassade wurde mit einem System aus durchlöcherten Metallplatten verkleidet, die an das Caltrans-Gebäude in Los Angeles aus dem Jahr 2004 erinnern. Diese Verkleidung bietet den Büros Schutz vor der Sonne und trägt unter anderem dazu bei, dass keine Klimaanlage benötigt wird. Die Metallplatten gehen am Fuße des Turms in den Platz über.
Des Weiteren wird in diesem Gebäude ein ausgeklügelteres Fahrstuhlsystem verwendet als im Caltrans-Projekt. Die Fahrstühle halten nur alle drei Stockwerke und öffnen sich zu den mit Werken von Ed Ruscha geschmückten Hallen. In der unterirdischen Garage gibt es so gut wie keine Parkplätze für die meisten der 1.700 Mitarbeiter, die täglich in dem Gebäude arbeiten. Auf diese Weise werden die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel unterstützt.
Das Projekt steht für eine einfache und mächtige Architektur. Dennoch sind die technischen Daten komplex. Ove Arup Engineering und Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory waren zwei Jahre lang damit beschäftigt, ein maßgeschneidertes System auszuarbeiten, um den Energiebedarf im Gebäude gering zu halten. "Für uns ist das kein Riese", gesteht Thom Mayne. "Das Federal Building ist eine Synthese von Architektur und Moral." Es zeigt, wie sich Nachhaltigkeit mit ausgesprochener Kreativität vereinen lässt.
 








 Produkt des Monats

Das neue, patentierte Deckensystem AirDeck® für eine kreativere, effizientere und rentablere Bauweise, durch die vor allem die Verwendung von Rohstoffen (Stahl, Zement, Kies, etc.) um 35% gesenkt wird.

AirDeck® sorgt für eine wahre Revolution im Baugewerbe. Das in zwei Richtungen tragende monolithische Deckensystem, das für mehrgeschossige Bauten wie Apartmenthäuser, Bürogebäude, Hotels, Krankenhäuser, Industriebauten, Geschäfte oder Parkhäuser konzipiert ist, besteht aus einer Schalungsplatte und superleichten, recycelten Hohlkörpern aus Polypropylen, namens Airboxen. Diese werden in einem 300 x 300 mm großen Raster montiert und kleben nicht am Beton. Die Hohlkörper gibt es in vier verschiedenen Höhen, um je nach Anforderung Decken zwischen 280 mm und 450 mm konstruieren zu können. Die steife Struktur der Airbox gestattet eine hohe Punktbelastung. Die Materialien sind wiederverwertbar und recyclingfähig. Die vorgefertigte Schalungsplatte enthält alle unteren Bewehrungen. Die in der unteren Schicht integrierten Stahlgitterträger dienen als Aufhängepunkte, garantieren die Festigkeit der Schicht während der Verarbeitung und gewährleisten eine optimale Haftung des Schüttbetons. Dieses Verfahren ist eine technische Meisterleistung, die im Übrigen große Freiheiten bei der Konzeption ermöglicht (Spannweiten bis 14 X 14 m für große Freiflächen), Materialersparnis, Höheneinsparungen bei den Bauwerken (bei acht Stockwerken gewinnt man ein Stockwerk an Höhe, ein sehr wichtiger Aspekt im Städtebau), leichtere Fundamente und tragende Wände.

Mit der Aktivierung des Betonkerns, wie im Projekt SKBS Oost Watergraafsmeer in Amsterdam (Architekturbüro Kraaijvanger Urbis / 2007) wird die Betonmasse des Gebäudes zur Energiespeicherung genutzt, um den Wärmebedarf mit viel geringeren Wassertemperaturen zu decken. Es ist möglich, im Sommer das Wasser aus dem Untergeschoss in diesen Leitungen zirkulieren zu lassen und so die gesamte Masse des Gebäudes abzukühlen.

Zur Information: Aktivierung der thermischen Masse des Betons = Aufheizung bei geringer Temperatur (+-26°) und Kühlung bei hoher Temperatur (+-18°).

Armstrong Bioguard:
für Decken von Gesundheitseinrichtungen ausgelegte Produkte

Während die Wahl eines Deckensystems gemäß seinen Leistungen und seiner Ästhetik erfolgt, haben im Gesundheitssektor andere Kriterien Vorrang. Zur Verbesserung des Komforts werden in architektonischer Hinsicht viele Anstrengungen unternommen, um die Einrichtungen freundlicher zu gestalten. Studien weisen nach, dass eine günstige akustische Umgebung die Heilung der Patienten beschleunigen und dem Krankenhauspersonal gestatten kann, unter besseren Bedingungen zu arbeiten. Ausschlaggebend ist indessen die antimikrobielle Wirkung. Somit müssen Hängedeckensysteme hier einem sehr hohen Leistungsniveau entsprechen. Eine Deckenplatte darf die Entwicklung von Mikroorganismen, die sich auf ihrer Oberfläche ablagern könnten, nicht begünstigen. Armstrong schlägt angepasste Lösungen vor, deren Leistungsspektrum von minimalen Anforderungen bis hin zu strengsten Auflagen reicht. Für Zonen mittlerer und schwerer Infektionsrisiken sollten die Platten Bioguard Plain oder Bioguard Acoustic gewählt werden. Die spezielle Armstrong Bioguard Farbbeschichtung enthält Elemente, die pathogene Bakterien wirksam bekämpfen, und lässt sich mit gewöhnlich in Gesundheitseinrichtungen verwendeten Produkten reinigen und desinfizieren.

Nur selten ist ein Hängedeckensystem in einem Bereich mit sehr hohem Infektionsrisiko notwendig. Für den Fall jedoch, dass sich der Zugang zum Plenum als unerlässlich erweist, bietet Armstrong das Produkt Orcal Bioguard in der Version Clip-in Plain mit Silikonfugen an, das sich zum Einsatz in pharmazeutischen und Krankenhausreinräumen eignet. Orcal Bioguard erreicht beim Test ISO 14644-1 das Niveau ISO 3 und entspricht und genügt sämtlichen Testvorgaben der Norm NF S 90-351.

Recent representative works include large-scale projects such as the Vienna airport extension, the MOMA high-rises in Beijing, the WHO / UNAIDS building in Geneva and the 1,000-bed hospital in Kortrijk (Belgium). Key to the Baumschlager & Eberle philosophy is that architecture is a complex entity requiring the integration of many different elements, to which justice can only be done if a building meets all the demands made on it in terms of structural intelligence, ecology, economic efficiency and social acceptability. This philosophy is reflected in the division of the »Architecture, People and Resources« exhibition into three distinct parts.

    Curtis Moffat created dynamic abstract photographs, innovative colour still lives and some of the most glamorous society portraits of the early 20th century. He was also a pivotal figure in Modernist interior design. Moffat's archive, containing over 1,000 photographic prints and negatives as well as press cuttings, scrap books and ephemera, was generously donated to the V&A in 2007 by Penelope Smail. The donation is celebrated by featuring some of its highlights in this display. It also acts as a starting point to study Moffat's pioneering but hitherto little-known work in more depth.

    The works of Jiri Kroha evolved in the events of First and Second World Wars. During the period 1921 to 1928 he practised in Mlada Boleslav and in 1925 he was appointed Professor of Architecture at the Technical University in Brno. In the 1930's, Kroha occupied himself with the issue of the "small flat" and the sociology of architecture. Kroha's early work was based on a distinctive conception of Cubism and Expressionism, which he formulated in a series of extremely varied competition designs for buildings.
